Sumo is not a sport limited to Japan. You might be surprised to learn that it is practiced in numerous countries worldwide, including the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Germany, France, Russia, Mongolia, China, India, Australia, New Zealand, Brazil, Argentina, South Africa, and many others. Each of these countries has its own federation organizing local and international events.
Even the Japan Sumo Association (JSA) has taken significant steps to globalize the sport, foster international relations, and promote sumo culture on a global scale.
If you live in the United Kingdom, consider yourself lucky! The Japan Sumo Association is preparing to host a Grand Sumo performance in London.
Grand Sumo Performance in London
The event will be held at the Royal Albert Hall in London from Wednesday, October 15, to Sunday, October 19, 2025. This marks the first Grand Sumo performance in London in 34 years, since 1991. It presents a unique opportunity to showcase Japan’s traditional culture to the world.
Over five days, audiences will enjoy matches featuring top-division sumo wrestlers. Additionally, the event will highlight sacred ceremonies and explain the historical and cultural significance of sumo, offering attendees an immersive experience of Japanese traditions and spirituality. Hosting the event at the iconic Royal Albert Hall further enhances this cultural and sporting fusion, creating a truly unforgettable experience.
General ticket sales are scheduled to start in late January 2025.
France: A Sumo Revival in 2026
France will also host a sumo tournament in June 2026, marking the first such event in the country in 30 years. The current chairman of the Japan Sumo Association, Hakkaku, competed in the last Paris tournament in 1986. This upcoming event at the Accor Arena in Paris aims to introduce sumo to a new generation while celebrating Japanese culture with a festival-like atmosphere.
The organizers hope to use this opportunity to share the time-honored traditions of Grand Sumo and deepen international appreciation for Japan’s unique cultural heritage.
These events represent exceptional opportunities to experience the excitement of sumo while connecting with Japanese traditions. Whether in London or Paris, they are not to be missed!
