Hoshoryu promoted to Yokozuna: Mongolia’s Rising Star Becomes the 74th Yokozuna

The brave Hoshoryu, a 25-year-old Mongolian wrestler, has been officially promoted to the rank of Yokozuna, becoming the 74th individual to hold this esteemed title in sumo wrestling history. The Japan Sumo Association (JSA) made this momentous decision on January 29, 2025, during an extraordinary board meeting.

Rise to Yokozuna

Hoshoryu’s journey to the top rank has been remarkable. He won the New Year Grand Sumo Tournament, finishing with a 12-3 record. His promotion comes after just 42 tournaments since his debut, making it the sixth-fastest ascension on record since 1958.

Hoshoryu becomes the sixth Yokozuna from Mongolia, following in the footsteps of his uncle, Asashoryu, who became the first Mongolian-born Yokozuna in 2003.

Significance and Responsibility

The promotion of Hoshoryu to Yokozuna carries great significance. It addresses the need for leadership in sumo following the retirement of the previous Yokozuna, Terunofuji.

Suffering from pain in both knees and chronic diabetes, Terunofuji fully competed in only two of the six grand tournaments last year. Since being promoted to the rank of yokozuna in July 2021, he was sidelined in 13 of 21 tournaments.

Hoshoryu’s promotion ensures the continuation of having a Yokozuna in the rankings, as the last time there was no Yokozuna was 32 years ago in 1993.

Acknowledging the weight of his new position, Hoshoryu stated, “I will strive to uphold the name of Yokozuna with every step I take”. He further committed, “I shall make utmost efforts with a radiant spirit so that I never disgrace the name of yokozuna”.

Looking Ahead

Hoshoryu’s debut as Yokozuna will take place at the Spring Grand Sumo Tournament in Osaka, starting March 9, 2025. As the sumo world adapts to this new generation of wrestlers, all eyes will be on Hoshoryu to see how he carries the mantle of sumo’s highest rank. We are very looking forward to this new Yokozuna’s debut!
